Welcome to the Around-the-Island Marathon Swim. This year our festival is filled with great delights - wonderful performances, free events, and lots of fun - as well as workshops, master classes and informative demonstrations.
It is a special year for us, one in which we have focused on the Around-the-Island Swim mission not only to bring nationally and internationally renowned artists into our midst, but to give back to the community through free events and community partnerships designed to showcase local artists.
The Around-the-Island Marathon Swim is set to enrapture festival lovers once again. Our venue will leave you fascinated, captivated and enthralled. With performances ranging from classic to contemporary, traditional to avant-garde, each act will inspire you to greater heights.
Around-the-Island Marathon Swim The Around-The-Island Marathon Swim (also known as the World Championship Ocean Marathon Swim) around Absecon Island is one of the toughest swimming events in the world.
Starting from Gardner's Basin, located off North New Hampshire Avenue, competitors have to swim 22.5 miles through wildly varying conditions of cold water, tide and current in order to win this open-water race. As well as the individual categories, there are also relay races where men and women compete for a first prize of around US $6000. Spectators gather along the whole length of the course to applaud the courage and tenacity of the contestants. Longport Jetty, the docks behind Margate and the homes along the waterway in Ventnor are good vantage points.…...more!
